# Messages and threads

> Reply clearly, mention people and AI, and keep decisions easy to find.

Messages are the basic building blocks of channels and direct messages. Threads keep a focused reply chain beside one
message, so the main conversation stays readable.

## Send a message

Type in the message box and press **Enter** to send. Press **Shift + Enter** for a new line.

You can add files, images, links, and emoji. In a channel, type `@` to mention a teammate, AI model, or agent. In a
direct message, mentions and notifications focus on the person you are messaging.

## Start a thread

Open the message actions and choose **Reply in thread**. Use a thread when:

* you are answering one question from a busy channel;
* several people need to work through a detail;
* an AI answer needs review without taking over the main conversation.

People who take part in the thread can return from their notifications. Mention someone if their input is needed.

## Use message actions

Open the actions on a message to find options available to you. Depending on the conversation and your access, you can:

* react with an emoji;
* reply in a thread;
* copy the message or its link;
* edit or delete your own message;
* turn the content into a canvas;
* use an action from a connected app, such as creating or linking a Linear issue.

## Write messages people can act on

A useful team message says what changed, why it matters, and what should happen next. For example:

> The onboarding copy is ready for review. Please check the three screens linked below by Thursday. Mina owns the final
> decision; use this thread for comments.

Use a reaction for quick acknowledgement. Use a reply when you need to add information or make a decision.

## Edit and delete carefully

Edit small mistakes freely. If an edit changes a decision or request after others have replied, add a note explaining
what changed. Delete messages only when the content should no longer be part of the conversation record.
